Edinora on Shark Tank India Season 5: The Edible-Grade Toothpaste That Sparked a New Oral Care Conversation
“If you wouldn’t swallow it, then why would you ever let it into your mouth?”
This was the question we carried with us to the stage of Shark Tank India Season 5.
But instead of just saying it, our founder, Prabhakaran Gopinathan, chose to demonstrate it. In front of the Sharks, he opened a tube of Edinora toothpaste, poured some of it directly into his mouth, and swallowed it.
The reaction was immediate. The Sharks looked at him in disbelief. Their expressions clearly said, “What are you doing? That’s toothpaste.”
And that reaction was natural. Because toothpaste is something that should stay far away from our digestive system.
But we wanted to show, not just tell, that our formulation is built differently. With safety, transparency, and edible-grade ingredients at its core, Edinora is absolutely safe, even if swallowed accidentally.
It was about conviction. It was the ultimate proof of our 22-year journey to create a truly edible-grade toothpaste.
When we stepped onto that stage, we weren’t just presenting a toothpaste. We were inviting people to rethink how oral care products should be made and what they should contain.
What Is Shark Tank India?
Shark Tank India is one of the country’s most-watched business reality shows, where entrepreneurs present their ideas to a panel of seasoned investors known as the “Sharks”, who invest their own capital in exchange for equity.
Over the seasons, the panel has included well-known business leaders such as Aman Gupta (Co-founder of boAt), Namita Thapar (Executive Director, Emcure Pharmaceuticals), Anupam Mittal (Founder of Shaadi.com), Peyush Bansal (Co-founder of Lenskart), and Vineeta Singh (CEO of SUGAR Cosmetics), Mohit Yadav ( Co-founder of minimalist), Kunal Bahl (Co-fonder of Snapdeal).
These investors evaluate business models, financials, scalability, and long-term vision before deciding whether to invest their own capital.
Season 5, Episode 40 of Shark Tank India, featuring Edinora, aired on Sony Entertainment Television and is now available for streaming on Sony LIV. The episode brought our story and formulation philosophy to a national audience.
If you missed the broadcast, you can watch the full pitch on the Sony LIV platform.
A Vision Born in Kerala
Edinora was founded in 2022 in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, by Prabhakaran Gopinathan, along with Praveen PJ and Ashika Nambiar. The idea did not begin as a trend-driven startup concept. It grew out of years of observation, research, and one fundamental question:
Why does most oral care focus on killing 99.9% of germs when the mouth naturally contains both beneficial and harmful bacteria?
For decades, the dominant message in oral care has been about elimination. But the human mouth is not a surface to sterilize. It is more like a forest, a living ecosystem where balance matters.
When that balance is disturbed, problems begin.
Our products are built around the belief that oral care should support this natural microbial equilibrium rather than aggressively disrupt it. That philosophy became the foundation of our formulation, and wanting this philosophy to reach every household is exactly what gave us the confidence to walk into Shark Tank.
The Philosophy Behind the Pitch
Our flagship toothpaste, Edinora Sensipro, is formulated with over 20 natural, edible-grade ingredients including miswak, licorice, turmeric, neem, clove, mint, and more.
It is free from SLS, parabens, silica, calcium carbonate, triclosan, artificial colours, and artificial flavours.
To clarify: it is not meant to be eaten as food.
But it is formulated with ingredient transparency and safety in mind, recognizing that during daily brushing, small amounts may be accidentally swallowed.
In addition to toothpaste, Edinora’s broader oral care range also includes an alcohol-free herbal mouthwash designed to refresh without the typical burning sensation many people associate with “strong” cleaning. Instead of aggressively disrupting the mouth’s ecosystem, it is formulated to support microbial balance while helping manage bad breath gently.
We also offer a copper tongue cleaner crafted with smooth, blunt edges and a flexible design for safe daily use. Copper has traditionally been valued for its natural antimicrobial properties, making it a thoughtful addition to a balanced oral hygiene routine.
Together, these products reflect our larger philosophy: oral care does not need to be harsh to be effective.
The Deal: Aman Gupta Sees the Vision
We entered the program seeking ₹2 Crore for 5% equity, implying a ₹40 Crore valuation.
The conversation that followed was detailed and direct. The Sharks examined our numbers, our focus on oral care, and whether an edible-grade, microbiome-conscious approach could truly stand out in a competitive market.
Then, something interesting happened that shifted the entire energy of the room.
Aman Gupta decided to try the toothpaste right there during the pitch. Initially, he wasn’t impressed with the taste, which is natural considering Edinora lacks the artificial sweeteners and heavy foaming agents that most people are used to. But as the minutes passed, something changed.
Aman noticed that while the initial taste was different, his mouth felt incredibly fresh and clean long after the trial. The after-feel was pleasant, natural, and lasting.
That delayed realization changed everything. He commented, "You have found the product-market fit." He recognized that ingredient transparency, safety, and microbial balance were not trends, but emerging expectations from informed consumers.
Recognizing the long-term potential of our product, Aman made an offer of ₹2 Crore for 10% equity, implying a revised valuation of ₹20 Crores.
And he added, if Edinora achieves ₹4 Crores in revenue in FY 2025–26, 2% equity will be returned to the founders.
The structure reflected both trust and accountability. It showed confidence in our ability to grow while ensuring that we remain focused and disciplined.
After careful consideration, we accepted the offer.
Why This Moment Matters
Appearing on Shark Tank India was more than a television moment for us. It was national recognition of a brand we have quietly built over the years.
On that stage, our formulation, our numbers, and our belief in microbiome balance were examined in front of millions of viewers. The investment was important but the validation was equally meaningful.
For a Kerala-born brand to be evaluated, questioned, and ultimately backed by one of India’s leading entrepreneurs marked a significant milestone in our journey.
It signalled that ingredient transparency, clean label formulation, and a balance first approach to oral care are not niche ideas anymore, they are part of a larger shift in how consumers think.
What Makes Edinora Different?
Edinora Sensipro toothpaste stands apart because of its formulation philosophy:
- Non-foaming, low-abrasive composition
- Microbiome-conscious approach
- Edible-grade ingredient selection
- Clinically evaluated safety testing
- Designed to support gum health and plaque control
Rather than disrupting the mouth’s ecosystem, our goal is to support it while maintaining effective hygiene.
The Journey Continues
Shark Tank India was not the destination. It was a defining milestone.
The stage gave us visibility. The deal gave us momentum. But what truly matters is what comes next.
Our commitment remains the same as it was on day one to create personal care products that families can use with confidence. To be transparent about what goes into our formulations. To support the body’s natural balance rather than disrupt it.
Oral care is where our story began. But our larger vision extends beyond toothpaste. We are building a thoughtful range of herbal oral, hair, and skin care products rooted in clean formulation, ingredient clarity, and respect for the body’s natural systems.
Appearing on Shark Tank strengthened our belief that this approach resonates with people who are seeking safer, smarter everyday care.
We stepped onto that stage with conviction.
We step forward now with responsibility.
